Sugar Glider Breeders

Sugar gliders are so adorable that it’s easy to buy one on impulse at a pet store or online.  You can run into a lot of problems if you don’t buy your pet from a breeder that is reputable.

 Bonding issues seems to be one of the most prevalent issues when you buy from a website or even a pet store.  In order to bond, it is desirable to buy your glider as a baby and not an adult.  Baby sugar gliders  are called ” joeys”. The babies need to be 7 to 9 weeks old before they are weaned.  After they are out of the mother’s pouch, they can  be removed and taken home.

After a joey has been weaned, they will start to bond to whomever or whatever they are exposed to regularly.  It can take up to two months for the bonding to complete ,and sometimes longer.  A good sugar glider breeder will sell a joey at the proper time, increasing the chances of a good bonding.

Often times, a sugar glider is not handled enough during those important first two months in a pet store , making it very difficult to get them to bond later on, if ever.

Make sure your sugar glider is healthy before you buy it.  The glider should like being handled and be active. It also should have a muscular build and bright black eyes.  You won’t be able to verify any of this if you purchase your glider from a website.

Most websites will ship your glider to any airport you choose. This sounds nice, but flying a joey can be very harmful. A reputable sugar glider breeder will not ship joeys in groups of less than 3 or 4. 

Shipping one or two babies alone can be very stressful, and many times they will die. Even if you have a guarantee from the seller to replace any dead animal, it won’t help those that live and end up with ongoing medical issues. In the very least, it could take weeks for your joey to recover from the stress.

Sugar gliders can live between 12 and 15 years, so it’s really  worth putting in the effort to start out the relationship with your glider the right way, and with the right breeder. If at all possible, go to the breeder’s facility. You will be able to see for yourself how the sugar gliders are handled and the care that is given. The breeder can also give you invaluable advice on the bonding and care of your new exotic pet.

 Of course, it’s also a good idea to try and purchase your joey from a breeder that is willing to bring your animal to your home.

 The other very important thing to be aware of, is that in the United States, a Federal Exotic Pet License issued by the US Department of Agriculture, is required in order to sell baby sugar gliders.

Do not buy from a breeder without this license.
